What We Are

We are an interdenominational Christian fellowship at Santa Clara University. Centered on Christ, Core stands upon the foundation of the local church, scripture and Gospel. We build one another together in truth and love to grow lifelong faith and glorify God. Our statement of faith, listed below, outlines what we as a Christian fellowship believe and stand for. Our leadership team is required to affirm this statement, but individual members do not have to.

"So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit." —Ephesians 2:19-22

We affirm and believe that sacrificial love of God and love of neighbor is central and foundational to the Christian faith; the entirety of Scripture is expressed through these two commands.

We believe and uphold the Bible to be the written revelation of God, complete and sufficient in all respects. We believe the Scriptures to be inspired by God and therefore fully authoritative in and of themselves.

We believe in one true and eternal God who is unchanging. We believe God is the Creator of all that exists in heaven and in earth. The God who is described in the Bible is unique; He is unlike anyone or anything else in all the universe. God has all power, all knowledge, all wisdom, and is due all glory, honor and praise. All things will, in the end, result in the glory of God.

We believe in one God who exists eternally in the community of three Persons (Father, Son, Spirit) of the same essence. Each Person is fully and completely God, each possessing the attributes of God described in Scripture. The Father, Son, and Spirit have eternally existed in the relationship described by the term "Trinity."

We believe that Jesus Christ, the second Person of the Trinity and God’s only begotten Son, took on the form of humanity, becoming fully man while remaining fully God. Coming to earth, He was born of the virgin, lived a sinless and blameless life, gave Himself as the perfect, atoning sacrifice for the sins of His people, and triumphantly rose from the grave. Jesus Christ is the fullness of God in bodily form, perfectly revealing to us the character and nature of God, and demonstrating the Father’s love for all people.

We believe that humanity was created in the image of God, but chose to rebel against their creator in the Garden. As a result, sin entered into the world, bringing spiritual death to all people and producing in them a sinful nature that inclines them from birth to seek their own desires rather than submit to the loving will of God. In order to rescue His fallen creation, God chose to send Jesus Christ to die in the place of His people, providing full and complete forgiveness of sins by His death upon the cross of Calvary. Through the resurrection, Jesus Christ confirmed the reality of His Lordship over all things, and completed His saving work by defeating death. No other work can provide for the forgiveness of sins, and no addition is needed or can be made to the completed and finished work of Christ.

We believe that God regenerates sinful people by the power of the Holy Spirit, bringing them to new life by grace through faith. As a result of this faith in the life, death, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, God justifies and makes righteous the one who believes.

We believe Jesus Christ established His Church, which is made up of all the people of God. His Church, listens to His Word as found in the Bible. All who believe in Christ are placed in His body, the Church. Active involvement in a local church is encouraged for each believer.

We believe that Christ is coming again to judge the living and the dead. Until His return, believers are to live lives that bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. The Church is to be busy doing the work of evangelism and discipleship, proclaiming the pure, uncompromised Gospel of Christ by teaching the Word of God.
